ROLLS ROYCE LIMITED.

REPORT ON "SILTED-UP" PHANTOM III MARK V MATRICES.

We have been notified by Messrs. Rolls Royce Limited, Derby, that several of their customers owning PHANTOM III Cars have complained about loss of cooling efficiency. On investigating this complaint Rolls Royce discovered that the Matrices were "silted up", this sediment restricting the flow of water and number of affected waterways was giving rise to the trouble complained of.

A number of Matrices were returned to us for examination and our report which follows :-

Radiator No.1 Mark V. {VIENNA}
This matrix was flow tested without a bottom tank and with a special top tank ensuring a free waterflow, the inlet pipe being 2½" diameter. It passed 60 g.p.m. with a 7' head of water. It was noted that six or seven half waterways were choked. This matrix was returned to Messrs. Rolls Royce Limited.

Radiator No.2 Mark V. {VIENNA}
This matrix was flowed as above, and passed 43 g.p.m. 13 half waterways were blocked. The waterways were opened, and another flow test showed 62 g.p.m. It was noticed, however, that the 13 half waterways were still choked. Hot Kyrac, at a temperature of between 70° to 100° C. were circulated (thermo-syphon) continuously through this matrix for six days following which the matrix was flow tested. 75 g.p.m. was obtained and it was noted that only four half waterways were blocked.

Radiator No. 3 Mark V. {VIENNA}
This radiator was delivered complete with tanks and a flow test was made with the tanks in position, the flow test being carried out through the thermostat opening. A figure of 38 g.p.m. was obtained.
