Bentley / Mr Barrington} - Axle Failure. The axle became noisy after 5,500 miles. Upon investigation it was found that the two end plates of the axle box were not firmly tightened up and practically all the oil had drained out. The bolts were tightened up and the axle refilled. Oil was noticed coming out of the o.s. brake drum during further running and became so bad that it was emptying the box. It was decided to stop the test and return to the Works. Examination of the axle proved that the oil seal on the o.s. axle shaft bearing had perished, allowing a stream of oil to flow down the tube. The teeth of the pinion and crown wheel had picked up. The box was found to have distorted. A new box, end plates, oil seals, pinion and crown wheel are needed. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/G.W.Hancock. | ||
