20 HP. CHASSIS. STEERING.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has asked me to point out to you the following facts:-

1. The new steering column with .700 lead of worm and nut has been ordered up for "K" Series, this being the first Series into which it could be introduced without producing scrap. In the meantime, however, there are 219 more chassis to build, at an output of only 6 per week, which means that it will be 36 weeks before the new stiffer steering with the low ratio worm and nut will be available.

2. We have an intermediate lead of worm and nut of .800 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has issued a Standardization Sheet for this, which is on the way round, and is being signed up. This lead of nut and worm on the 20 HP. is equivalent to the .940 worm and nut on the 40/50. which we are using on changeovers where complaints are made against Phantom steering.

The improvement with the .800 lead, which only involves scrap to the extent of the nut and worm, the exact cost of which we will let you know, is so great that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} in view of the time which will elapse before the entirely new column is available, is of the opinion that we should standardize this at once and bring it in on "J" Series or on the earliest chassis on "J" Series at whichit can be introduced consistent with producing the new parts.
