X7230. To RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c.c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/KT.9.6.32. 19-EX. EXHAUST SYSTEM 10,000 MILES. We have decided to do away with the lagging on the 40/50 exhaust system and hence the expensive staybright material. In order to get rid of the "tinny" noise which occurs when the lagging is removed, we have to make the downtake, expansion box, and intermediate pipe thicker than at present, to the following dimensions - Specification as given in RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/WSCI/LS20.4.32. Present Staybright Proposed Mild Steel & Firths Crown Downtake .104" (12 S.W.G.) (.160" (8 S.W.G.) (.144" (9 S.W.G.) Expansion Box. .080" (14 S.W.G.) (.160" (8 S.W.G.) (.144" (9 S.W.G.) Intermediate .064" (16 S.W.G.) (.104" (12 S.W.G.) Pipe Sch.1582 (.092" (13 S.W.G.) We should like to have each pipe and the expansion box available in two gauges in the Mild Steel for G.W.H. to take to France with him. Will you please urge the D.O. for the delivery of the necessary material. Incidentally we propose to make the central tube of the 40/50 silencer in Mild Steel, though its length may not be exactly as at present, so one or two 6 ft. lengths of this in M.S. might with advantage be obtained.
