LETTER TO THE AUTOCAR. We read with interest your letter of ------- concerning the Bentley car, but should like to point out that only part of the achievements of this car have been ventilated, so far. Apparently, at the conclusion of each Tourist Trophy race, Mr. Hall took his car to Shelsley Walsh, where he acheived an equally convincing series of successes. In 1934 and 1935, he did the best "sports car time", clocking 45 secs. and 46-2/5 secs. In 1936, he again did the best time in his class, with 50.99 secs; his slower time being, in spite of the larger engine, accounted for, we understand, by the fact that the car came direct from Ulster with a 125 m.p.h. axle ratio. At the 1936 Meeting, Forrest Lycette's Bentley clocked 50.44 secs. It is therefore clear that the performance of the 4 1/2 litre Bentley must have been very close to that of the 8-litre Bentley on sheer acceleration alone, in spite of the disparity of engine dimensions. Yours, etc., | ||
