We have carried out tests on a standard contact breaker to ascertain whether sparking occurs at make as well as break using a disc provided with a small hole which could be set with the hole immediately over the points either at make or break. The disc was driven from the central spindle. With the contact breaker connected up to a standard ignition coil and the speed adjusted to 700 r.p.m. no sparking at all could be observed at the instand of make, all the sparking occurring at break.
