| COPY. DUNLOP RUBBER CO.LTD., ASTON CROSS, BIRMINGHAM. June 4th. 1920. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Rd., DERBY. For the attention of Mr. H.W.Harvey Bailey. Dear Sirs, Referring to the recent conference between Mr. Bailey, Mr. Hives, Colonel Matthew and the undersigned, with regard to the testing of Dunlop Straight Side Tyres on the Rolls-Royce test car, I would say that the wheels have now been received by us from Coventry. The tyres are being fitted and the whole will be forwarded to you sometime during the course of next week. In order to ensure that this Tyre Test will be of maximum service to both of us, and also comparable, as far as possible, with other tests which we carry out on your own fleet of test vehicles, we would ask that the following conditions be carefully observed. We understand that we are assured of your co-operation on these lines and for the purpose of putting the matter quite in order I am arranging for one of our test inspectors, Mr. Fox to visit you very shortly, with a view to conferring with Mr. Hives on the matter. The conditions we would like observed are as follows:- (1) All test tyres will be fitted and removed from the wheels by us. This can be done either in your presence or elsewhere, just as may be arranged. (2) Only the results of rear tyres are regarded as important by us. The rear tyres, therefore, should be changed on to opposite sides of the vehicle every thousand miles or thereabouts. No other change in the tyres should be made during the whole course of their life, and drivers should not be allowed to interfere with them in any way, except of course bringing into use the spare wheel when rendered necessary by failure or puncture etc. (3) The vehicle to be loaded as to place a normal running load upon the back tyres, and this load to be kept constant.
