Rolls Royce Limited., DERBY. X/R3 23rd April, 1937. Dear Sirs, Your reference...Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wst.6/AP. Wind Screen Wiper. We are in receipt of your letter of the 22nd instant, and are very sorry indeed that one of our SW.3.type Screenwipers has failed while undergoing a test on a Bentley car in France. We are not very clear just when you had this wiper, but we rather think it must have been some little time ago. As regards the link in the gearbox it is most unfortunate that this has fractured, as some little time ago this component was thickened up from .060" to .100" and we shall be very surprised indeed if the one on the car is of the thicker gauge. Actually this link was thickened up so that the increased gauge checked the tendency for the link to lift away from the gears towards the case cover. As far as we can trace, there has only been one instance of the .060" size of link fracturing at the point where the pin is fitted. We have sent off to you immediately a link of the later type for which, without doubt, you will have sent on immediately for fitting to the car, which presumably is still out in France. Mr. Thacker will make a point of having this matter over with you when next visiting your factory. Yours faithfully, JOSEPH LUCAS, LIMITED. | ||
