To DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} " " EH. ORIGINAL 7th January, 1919. E5/G7119. X.3481. X.3485. RE MAGNETO FOR 20 H.P. ENGINE. It is proposed to have magneto and battery ignition on the 20 H.P. chassis engine, with a common high tension distributor and a tension switch, enabling either source of current, namely magneto or battery, to be used alternatively for running the engine. The battery ignition acts as a standby in case of breakdown of the magneto, there being only one sparking plug per cylinder. For this purpose, we require a magneto without a high tension distributor, but with a high tension terminal, suitable for connecting up, via the switch, to a distributor run in some convenient position on the engine. The magneto should be, if possible, the same size as regards magnets and armature, as the Bosch ZF.4 type. Would you kindly put out enquiries for such a machine. We do not suppose that our requirements are met exactly by any existing machine on the market, but we think that magneto manufacturers will be prepared to make a special model for us if necessary.
