Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} 302 Cgh.{W Clough}2/W.13.10.37. Phantom III - Rear Axle Hypoid Bevel Gears. With reference to letter dated 1st. October, 1937 received from Gleason Works of America, together with undeveloped summary No. 823 and development change sheet for our 8/34 hypoid rear axle bevels, they are evidently proposing to raise the root angle of the pinion, modifying the gear to suit, and according to the information given it will be necessary to modify the present cutter equipment, which can be done by Messrs Buck & Hickman, Ltd. of London. A 12° 16 min. pitch angle segment will also be required for the pinion rocking machine instead of the existing 15° 18 min. pitch angle segment, but the Works may have a segment 12° 16 min. or one which is somewhat near to this angle. Summary No. 823 just received from the Gleason Works gives theoretical information only and development work is necessary in order that the correct cutter setting, etc. can be obtained for producing the best gears, therefore we suggest that three pairs of new gear are ordered from Gleason Works, requesting them to let us have a revised summary and development change sheet in duplicate in due course. It will also be advisable to order one pair of soft master gears so that same can be retained by our Gear Cutting Department. Cgh.{W Clough} | ||
