SECRET. Headquarters, Central Landing Establishment, Royal Air Force, Ringway, Nr. Manchester. Ref:- CLE/S.1406/2/E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 27th January 1941. Thornycroft Lorry with Ford V8 Winch Unit. Dear Sirs, The Ford V8 winch unit mounted on a Thornycroft lorry has been in use for training. 2. The points below are made in criticism of it. They are given in full though they may not all be appropriate. 3. " Visibility of launching point, cable paying on " mechanism and lead off pulleys are good. Braking of cable drum " is adequate. " Visibility when Glider approaches release point is poor, " due to projecting hood over Winch driver. " Clutch leverage arrangement does not allow adequate " clutch control. No guillotine is fitted. " Protection for driver from cables is not very good and " would not be adequate if heavier cable were used.
