x4261 RJ. from Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 7/LG19.5.22. 40/50 CHASSIS - RE SQUEAKING OF THICK LEAF x4261 REAR SPRINGS. Referring to the attached ref. BJ11/H9.5.22. The reason we do not consider that we ought to continue the despatch cars with thick leaf springs is because we know that they have the fault of causing squeaks of which we are continually having to deal with from customers at the present time. If we continue to fit thick leaf springs we suggest that we ought to taper the ends of the spring and fit gaiters, before the customer receives the car and has a chance of complaining. We believe the approximate cost of supplying and fitting Gaiters to the rear springs is £5. This price may be reduced if we standardise them. On the whole, however, we think the best proposition might be, instead of spending more money in making thick leaf springs satisfactory, we should scrap them altogether and fit only thin leaf springs to new cars because the thick leaf springs with gaiters demand shock absorbers for perfect riding and again, the thick leaf springs are much more liable to break.
