For the attention of F.{Mr Friese} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls Esq:

Dear Sirs,

35 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} BEARING FOR REAR
AXLE PINION.

With reference to the bearing returned, our 2/MDJT.35 which has been used on a 6-hour dynamometer test, and having sustained a thrust load for twenty minutes on bottom gear of approximately 10,000 lbs., and a journal load about 80 per cent of this, we have examined the bearing and find that no actual failure has occurred, although a certain amount of indentation of the tracks is present.

We are of the opinion that a certain amount of foreign matter of some description has been in the bearing during the test, and this has to some extent confused the marking on the track surfaces etc. with the result that it is impossible for us to be definite on the matter. Some of the marking might readily indicate pending overload failure, but on the other hand, due to the damage which has occurred, this marking is somewhat confused, and with the evidence before us, we are inclined to think that the marking is in the main due to the foreign matter, rather than pending thrust overload failure.
