To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} (Held up). c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Sa. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Hn.{F. C. Honeyman - Retail orders} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} PHANTOM 1 RIDING. x 8410 8770 or 8005 It will be remembered that, although lubricating and plating the springs of Phantom I cars did a great deal to satisfy owners, there still remained a number of cases of cars with particularly bad weight distribution that did not give satisfaction. The trouble complained of was pitching between 40 and 50 m.p.h. We have tried out some front springs giving 4.5" normal deflection instead of the standard 3.1" deflection of Phantom I. The Repair Dept. are satisfied that these springs materially reduce the trouble complained of and have asked us to standardise them. As a matter of interest we are running the experimental springs on the Bumping rig and mean while are asking Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} to consider the question of design. We have satisfied ourselves that the steering is not adversely affected, and that with the axle control there is no danger of the brakes taking charge.
