COPY OF LETTER FROM:- AIR MINISTRY, LONDON, W.C.2. 29th February 1928. ref. 789999/27/R.D.E.3/AGF. FOR ATTENTION OF MR. ROWLEDGE Gentlemen, "F" TYPE ENGINES I am directed to enclose herewith a copy of a curve received from Messrs. Short Bros. in connection with their proposal to fit four "F" type engines into Singapore Mark II aircraft. It will be noted from this curve that it is proposed to run the engines as low as 1700 r.p.m. and that the total H.P. required from the four engines at the lowest cruising speed will be 800 (200 B.H.P. per engine). I shall be pleased if you will arrange to carry out consumption tests at the ranges given on this curve in a similar manner to the tests carried out on the Condor IIIA engine for Flight Lieut. Carr's flight. It would be appreciated if throttle curves could be taken on the F.XI fitted with 7 to 1 compression ratio pistons and on the F.XI.S. and F.XI.MS. engines to enable the firm to definitely settle the type of engine which will be adopted for installation. Confirming my conversation with you on the 27th instant, will you please arrange for tests to be taken on the F.XI, F.XI.S. and F.XI. MS. engines. These engines to be run at a speed of 7½% below normal r.p.m. with a view to ascertaining the B.H.P. which can be developed by each type without detonation when a Service fuel containing not more than 30% aromatics is used. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, Enc. (Signed) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Bulman. A.D./R.D.E. for Director of Technical Development Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd. DERBY. | ||
