Dear Mr. Robotham:

Many thanks for your letter of November 18. We would not expect that you would get better results from a copper-cooled valve than from a sodium-cooled valve in a side-valve engine. However, this has never been tried, and it might prove a very interesting test.

If you are interested and would care to send me the design of valve and the general lay-out, we would be glad to give you a further opinion.

In radial engines the valves all operate at different angles and yet we do not have any chronic trouble in any one cylinder, due to angle. For that reason, it seems to me that the sodium is quite violently agitated, regardless of angle. It is possible, however, that in your particular design a copper-cooled valve might be better, and I should be glad to check your lay-out.

Very truly yours,
THOMPSON PRODUCTS, INC.
