No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/LG25. 9. 25. to BJ. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I - OVER-OILING. +8980 BJL/H22.9.25. We take exception to the para. in this memo where you state it is evident that our 10,000 miles in France do not show up the over-oiling. The outstanding fault which we have had on all Phantom cars in France is the excessive amount of oil passing the pistons. At the Conference held in Derby (see C/M 113. 3. 25 ) at which yourself and CJ. were present, when it was decided to go on with the production of Phantom chassis and what this should include, it was pointed out that one of the unsolved problems on the Phantom car was over-oiling troubles. It was agreed that in spite of complaints, the production should go on but that they should work hand to mouth on pistons and rings. The main argument at that time was that Sales had run a large number of experimental Phantom cars and that they had had no trouble with the oiling when the cars were run under normal conditions. At that time numerous experiments were sent through by R.{Sir Henry Royce} but none of these proved successful. Without however waiting for the complaints to arise, there has been continual investigation going on on over-oiling and as a result there is no doubt that the Phantom cars produced today are much contd :- | ||
