We have been carrying out extensive tests to cure the groans from the Phantom II rear brakes. To obtain a satisfactory cure is necessary in view of the number and cost of complaints. We have had during the last four months, 30 complaints of rear brake groans which have cost approx. £47. We have, during our tests, found that by using the rear hand brake as a damper the groans are definitely cured. To make this arrangement possible on the present cars we have coupled the hand brake to the foot brake by a spring loaded lever. This arrangement is carried out on the brake actuating shafts fitted on the rear axle. It is so arranged that when the foot brake is applied the spring is compressed which in turn brings the hand brake into operation, further application of the foot brake compresses the spring but adds very little more load on the hand brake. To release the foot brake pedal of the heavier load we reduced the poundage of the pull off spring making the initial load 16 lbs. instead of 30 lbs. We herewith send a drawing of the arrangement as fitted. Att:. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}360. Cancelled by later memo. din. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W.
