27th. June 1939.

Robert Armitage, Esq.,

In order to prevent any such situation arising in the future, I arranged that Rolls-Royce Ltd. should produce the rollers, carburise and harden them, only leaving to the Hoffmann Co. the finishing process of grinding. We are continuing to use the same steel, but in producing the part checks are imposed and rollers broken from every batch carburised following our usual practice. We are certain that this trouble under these conditions will not recur, and I think I was justified in expecting that the Hoffmann Co. would follow a similar foolproof procedure, knowing the importance of the duty of the piece in question.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.

CHIEF ENGINEER - CHASSIS.
