TIN PLATING OF ALUMINIUM PISTONS.

For your information I have obtained from Mr. Brooks the operations necessary to successfully tin plate aluminium pistons:-

Operation:

(1) Dip in "Zonac" metal cleaner bath at 175°/180°F ("Zonac" can be obtained from Messrs. Cannings).

(2) Wash in running cold water.

(3) Dip in 20% solution of nitric acid approx. 2 seconds.

(4) Dip in cold distilled water.

(5) 5 minutes immersion in Sodium Stannate Bath at 175/180°F (very critical). The alkalinity of the bath should be controlled so that the free alkali does not exceed 1.2 ozs per gallon.

(6) Dip in cold running water.

(7) Final wash with water at 180°F.{Mr Friese}
