CHASSIS INSTRUMENT BOARD - THERMOMETERS. With reference to your BY12/H.9.2.21, in going over this job we should say that about 60 thermometers have been returned to us as faulty after the chassis have been delivered from the works, over and above several which have failed on test. About 80% of the failures are undoubtedly due to what we consider to be faulty manufacture, the remaining 20% being due to maltreatment or faulty fixing at the Coachbuilders. The chief failures are as follows :- (a) The faulty fixing of the pipe to the instrument, length of connection only being about 1/2". On later instruments this has now been improved and the length of contact extended. (b) Flaws in the connecting pipe, allowing leakage. (c) Instrument failed to read for no apparent external reason. Taking it on the whole, the instrument seems to be far too delicate to withstand the apparently rough handling which it gets, and the general vibration etc. to which it is subjected during its routine of functioning.
