To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}4/AP.21.9.37 Ph.III.No.14 UNIT The following memo is in reply to your HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/WSC.{W. S. Cassel}4/BA. 20.9.37 regarding decision on the queried parts for the above unit for 15,000 miles test. (1) Details for the oil level indicator ECD.76 have now been issued and this should be included. (2) LeC.5667 bottom tappets. We definitely require this scheme on the unit before it goes to France and if not available when the unit is ready for the test bed, should be fitted when the unit is in the car. In our memo we asked for half of the bottom tappets in S/ZN. with cloud-burst hardened face and half with a Chromium plated face. If there is a possibility of the chromium tappets being some time before they are ready, we should start off with a full set of cloudburst hardened ones and follow up with the chromium tappets when complete. It has now been decided to include the following in the assembly of this unit. Will you therefore instruct accordingly. (a) Hall's metal main bearings in A.C.6. with RR.56. shims. (b) Cylinder head gaskets in Klingerite .033 thickness and will be supplied by Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} (c) When the valves are in the fully lifted position the valve springs are choc-a-bloc or almost so. The valve guides E.88708 stand proud of the head by .475 and would like you to either machine the existing set on the unit down to a measurement of .450 or fit a new set machined to this dimension. In order to be clear of choc-a-bloc trouble, the D.O. have been notified to make the above modification. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} | ||
