[Handwritten Note]
C.T.S, As far as I know we have never run this type of bearing. JWH

Dear Mr. Robotham,

You may be aware that Mr. Hall wrote [strikethrough]Mr. Howlett[/strikethrough] on the subject of AC.9 Bearings, in which it was suggested that by rolling before heat treatment, and then heat treating for 24 hours afterwards, it would improve the bearing from every point of view, and that the Tensile strength would go up to probably 16 tons, but before really putting forward Bushes of this type to Bristol Aero for test, I would like your candid opinion as to whether you think that it is a really safe proposition, and that some work has been done at your end to prove this method of treating bearings.

We are making some progress with the various aircraft firms such as Napier and De Havilland, and as regards Bristol their big end bush is a proposition we would like to tackle, but before putting in rolled bushes for the job I would like your experience of same and also your advice, as we naturally do not wish to supply anything which may lead us into trouble or which is going to get the job a bad name.

As an experiment in the shops here we have rolled bushes which we find does increase the hardness anything up to 20 points on the Brinell method of checking, but by turning off about .020" from the outside of the bush we find that we have lost probably 12 points Brinell hardness, which would indicate that this method of rolling has a skin depth of something like .030" or possibly .040".
