COILS FOR WRAITH.

Attached is a report on the preliminary tests on the Rolls-Royce coil which has been designed on the lines of the high output Delco, which has given such good results previously.

It will be seen from the report that the performance of the Rolls-Royce coil is very promising. Our experience with it experimentally, however, is of course limited to one coil. Our experience on production is non-existent. Whilst, therefore, we want to go ahead with tests on this coil, we do not see how we can possibly standardise it for the first 100 Wraith cars without taking considerable risks. We recommend that we should use the Delco coil to start with. Delcos have already had a considerable amount of experience on this coil as it is standardised on Talbots. We have been running it for a considerable period on the majority of Wraith cars at Derby, and it is now running in France. So far we have had no trouble whatever with it.

We have asked Delcos to submit one or two coils with a finish more in keeping with Rolls-Royce standard than those we have been using in the past, and this they have agreed to do. They do not, however, like mounting the coil by means of the base, and we should like consideration to be given to holding it by the side Delco fitting.

Referring to the Rolls-Royce coil with the Delco type of winding, we had both Mr. Kennington and Mr. Rushton here, and they are emphatic that they do not like putting higher output coils in insulated casings. We are taking some measurements to see if our bakelite case does increase the coil temperature under running-conditions, but it appears certain this must be the case. In view of this fact it would appear to be wrong to penalise the Rolls-Royce product for the sake of appearance.
