Controllable Shock Dampers - Ph.II.

With reference to memo' Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.16/KW.29.6.34., the importance of first cleansing all the valves, ports etc., on this unit before assembly, has long been recognized by us and because of the importance of preventing grit or dirt getting into the pump after assembly, we have warned all depts. how necessary it is to exercise care in the simple, but important matter of replenishing the chamber with fresh oil.

We have already had complaints and pumps returned as faulty, when upon dismantling they have been found full of dirt, and in some cases the correct distance washers missing, these apparently being overlooked when re-assembling has taken place.

We have demonstrated to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} some time ago, how these pumps can be easily put out of action, through the employment of the rectangular hole on the top of the pump chamber being used as the filler, instead of at the designed elbow which is not so accessible.

Works depts. who handle this matter and depots have had their attention drawn to this, but when in service it is certain that the small cover will be removed for the purpose of re-filling, and thus lose the advantage of the filter that is already fitted to the correct orifice.

We suggest therefore, that when the pump is finally passed off test, this cover is sealed, to prevent its removal.

We are in agreement that if the pumps are assembled perfectly clean and kept clean during test and in service, they should function correctly, we note also that the pumps supplied by us for the Experimental cars, have been satisfactory.

We agree also that the need for the incorporation of a well designed filter in the new testing rig, that is now being made, is great.

E.J.J. should certainly see that this is done, also one should be immediately instructed for our present temporary rig, in order that we can carry on until the new one is ready.
