C O P Y. BY10-P26.9.23. CJ. C. Mr. Chandler. PISTONS. We have occasional trouble with customers pre-war engines from piston ring claps occurring, particularly after an overhaul has taken place in which we may have had to fit new pistons. To get over this certain proposals have been put forward - the main issue being that I would like to apply the narrow ring used on the post-war piston in cases of this kind which occur. The pre-war type of cast iron piston would be retained in its entirety, the only difference being that we would fit the narrow post-war rings to this type of piston. I attach herewith a copy of Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}11/W24.9.23., which shews the considerable amount of experimenting we have done on this type, and would like to have your consent to try it out on one or two difficult cases of the kind with customers who cannot be satisfied in any other way. I think the proposal is quite a reasonable one, and since it is only to be applied in a few cases until we find out whether it really does entirely eliminate the piston clap, it would be confined to a few cases only to which we require your consent to carry out the suggestion.
