Dict: 20.5.40. G.S.Salt, Esq., Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Salt, We have to thank you for your letter of the 17th in connection with the Leyland Big-end failure, but the last paragraph of your letter, that is, the alteration to the drilling of the crank-shaft is not quite clear. Apparently my letter was not quite clear on this point or you may have misunderstood my remarks. The drilling of the crank-shaft as it exists was carried out at the time AC.9 bearings were adopted, that is, the change was made at the time of the change from the combination of RR.56 top half bearing and white metal lower half and when they changed to AC.9 bearings for both top and bottom half the drilling of the crank-shaft was changed. A point of interest on our investigations here was the following facts. We took one of the bearings similar to those left with you and broke the bearing in half and then heated one half up to 400 degrees C. This, of course, produced tin sweating, and the tin has polished along the lines of seizure, showing that what was happened in service is that the tin sweated out of the bearing and then apparently tried to tin itself on to the shaft and this in turn has wiped the tin around the surface of the bearing in the lines shown by the seizure. If you take an ordinary half bearing which has not been run in an engine and heat it up to produce tin sweating the tin ROLLS-ROYCE A.C.9.
