For the attention of Mr. Grylls. Dear Sirs, Heat Treatment of Clutch Discs. We are very much obliged indeed for the information you have kindly given us in your letter of the 13th instant - for this earlier acknowledgment would have been made but for the fact that the present writer was away on business in the West of England until yesterday morning. Referring to heat treating of clutch discs, it is obvious that very elevated temperatures must have a detrimental effect on the life of the material, since partial distillation of certain ingredients that are used to impart durability takes place. Appreciating this fact, we have approached the problem from another direction and are now pre-treating the impregnant to eliminate one of the volatiles which will, in our opinion, effect precisely the same purpose as heat treatment after manufacture without any appreciable loss of durability. As Mr. Longley informed Mr. Grylls this morning, we are sending you a pair of clutch discs prepared in the manner indicated and we hope you will be able to give them a trial as soon as possible. We should be very much interested to know the result as we think that a substantial improvement will be effected. Yours faithfully, FERODO LIMITED. CHIEF ENGINEER. | ||
