X.294 X3878 RE STARTER MOTORS AND GENERATORS. I am in receipt of the comparative tests of the Bijur Westinghouse, and Bosch Starters. I will send you a further report when I have seen the machines, and Mr. Clark has been able to report upon them. It is probable, however, that your advice in the matter will be adopted, and your judgement confirmed, especially as you think the Bijur is probably the best made, and most suited for our work. I feel sure that we shall have to continue to use the epicyclic reduction, and I should be pleased if you would arrange for the Bijur machine to be made suitable for fitting it. The actual gearing will probably be better made in our own factory, so that it will suit the rest of the gear. I would like to point out that during the very cold weather that you experience this will render the engine very difficult to turn unless care is taken that it is lubricated with rather thinner oil than usual. We shall, therefore, if we attempt to turn a stiff engine at a high speed, put a very great load on the battery which may result in the paste of the battery coming out of the plates. I should therefore advise that we are not too venturesome in this direction, especially as our engines are so easy to start when fitted with our primer and the battery ignition. Contd. | ||
