EXPERIMENT NO. 168.

Report on Steering Pivot test.

Instructions were sent out by the Drawing Office how these pivots should be tested, the method was to fit the pivot to a standard axle and fix the axle to a bed-plate & apply the load on the outside ball bearing for the wheel in an upward direction.

[Diagram of a steering pivot and axle assembly]
Handwritten annotations on diagram:
- Pointing to the left end of the axle: "Bolted to the Bed plate here"
- Pointing to the top of the pivot: "B Deflection Measured"
- Pointing to the end of the stub axle: "A Deflection Measured"
- Pointing to the end of the stub axle: "Load Applied"

1. Test with a present standard pivot, one which has been thickened up. After each weight was taken off we tried the pivot to see that it worked freely, this was to see whether the permanent set had taken place in the stub axle or in the pivot itself.
