re. SUBFRAME - P. 2.

This is a report of the conference held at Park Ward's between BY/CGH.{W Clough} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} and a Works representative. The object of the conference was for Derby to see a case of a subframe which would not fit on a chassis and to learn where accuracy is needed and where it is not necessary. We were informed that the whole issue is receiving attention in Derby and that the following limits of accuracy were being aimed at:
(1) The upsweep of the frame at the rear will not vary beyond plus or minus .125 from the correct amount as tested by the frame channel template.
(2) The support brackets on each side channel will be set at exactly the correct vertical position relative to each other by means of a jig representing the subframe.
(3) The front support will not vary in height below the top of the level frame more than plus or minus .075".
(4) The height of the side hinge of the bonnet at the dash above the front support bracket of the subframe will be held to-

± .125 AT ANY POINT ON THE UPSWEEP
DEAD TO JIG
± .075"
+.050

(5) The dash to be square with the centre line of the chassis frame and the level plane of the chassis axis to plus or minus .050".
(6) There should be an adjustable packing of aluminium washers equal in thickness to present solid packing, front and rear only, and the brackets should be so disposed that if the frame and subframe be dead to dimensions these packings would be in use to mount the body. Owing to a possible variation of plus or minus .050 of the height of the bonnet shoulder the front packing may need to be varied by plus or minus .050, and the rear packing varied accordingly, and the rear rubbers will be only slightly compressed. In no case will the centre support be packed up or adjusted as at present.
