In another memo, we have given the results of the demonstration in Derby to arrive at an exact idea of the nature of the complaint. With a view to discovering the cause, and acquiring information for future use, we have arranged with HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to make the following experiments, which could not be done in the time we were in Derby. It is our intention to go up again a little later on.

(1) Disregarding the springing schedules, fit the weakest front springs in stock, and observe the effect on the complaint.

(2) What degree of relief is obtained by greatly weakening the rear springs?

(3) Try the effect of altering the relative stiffness of the front and rear springs, that is, say very stiff front, and very weak rear, (up to the point of no front springs at all by blocking up) and Very weak front and very stiff rear.

(4) What is the effect of moving the centre of gravity of the car backwards, say by carrying very heavy weights on the luggage grid?

(5) What is the effect on the rear passenger of concentrating the weights of the car immediately over the front and rear axles? It is thought that under this condition blows on the front springs should not be felt on the rear.

(6) Make EAC. 1.(with semi-elliptic rear springs) so that it can compare as regards weights, spring deflection, etc, with the complained of car, and see if an improvement results resembling that on the 20HP. This is being done, but HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} considers the car in its original state is not comparable as regards body etc, with a standard car.

(7) Rear shock dampers, but no front, on the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I saloon, to see how much of the trouble is contributed by the rear.
