Ref. 106(61-2) Z 528 Copy of minute 61-2 of the 106th Meeting of the T.C. TRE2/4.1.12. Mr Spinney. 4/1/12. Re Vinet and Michelin Rim Patents. Mr Barrington informed the Committee that he had interviewed the Michelin representative, who had advised us that the Continental Rim Co's wedge was not an infringement of the Michelin patents. The Michelin Co had since confirmed this in writing. This decision would enable us to build a rim having wedge pieces which had not a hook or clamp action against the side of the tyre rim. The principle of the Michelin patent is not good theoretically, in as much that it restricts the amount of wedge action, and relies on accurate fitting for the accomplishment of its purpose; it forms a safe guard against the operator deforming the tyre rim by too vigorously tightening the wedges. Mr Barrington suggested that we should design a rim and wedge, without the restriction contained in the Michelin patent, and overcome the risk of deformation of the rim by other means, such as forming each strip of rim between the wedges into a beam and tension member. The Committee agreed that Mr Spinney should be instructed to go into this question of design. | ||
