An oil consumption test has been made on the Phantom test bench engine in which the oil drain holes below the bottom scraper ring drilled in the standard way were compared with same sloping upwards. The test was made at 2000 r.p.m. and three quarter load. The oil pressure was 27 lbs/sq.in. and the temperature 60°C. 20° The sloping upward holes proved to have a slightly greater oil consumption than those in the std. - or downward - position using .9 pts/hr. compared with .7 pts/hr. for the latter. The oil measurements were made by the dry sump method we have previously employed for these tests and when the slope of the holes was changed - the original ones being plugged - care was taken not to remove the rings or any carbon which would be liable to influence the results.
