- 20 - 5. Independent front wheel suspension making the criss cross period of the frame very high. 6. Carrying the wheel contact out from centre-point as far as compatible with front wheel brake requirements. Our tests have shewn that it is impracticable to attempt to eliminate wobbles entirely by introducing friction or hydraulic damping into the actual steering gear as is done on some American cars. A little friction has slight beneficial results. A hydraulic steering gear is reported to eliminate wobbles. We have had no experience of this. Independent front wheel suspension is not necessarily an absolute cure for wobbles. The Lambda Lancia can be made to wobble with sufficient out of balance on the wheels. (d) Preventatives or palliatives. The following are the alterations which we should make to a car which suffered from high speed wobbles to effect a cure. They are tabulated in order of probable efficiency. 1. Carefully balance front wheels. 2. Increase front tyre pressure to maximum for riding comfort. 3. Tighten up front shock absorbers to maximum for riding comfort. 4. Check all steering joints, pivots, reduction gear etc. for slack. 5. Fit spring shackles as closely as possible. 6. Fit maximum front spring strength consistent with riding comfort. 7. Try selective assembly of front tyres. Some may be good, some bad for manufacturing errors. The difference between the best or the worst two of six may be noticeable. contd. | ||
