20 HP. STEERING COLUMN. X.5430
X.8430

We have just returned from Derby, where we have tried the 20 HP. column with a larger stationary tube, and carried solely off the dash, designed here some weeks ago.

In our view as regards stiffness this column is very much better than what is being supplied to customers as a rule. It is certainly stiffer than the std. New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I 'D' steering.

We are at work on a cast dash for the 20 HP. with a view to stiffening the column still further by carrying the support higher up in the same way as has been done on the Phantom. We are afraid however that it may be some time before the cast dash is standardised, and in the meantime it seems a pity that the new steering with the large worm and other improvements (including total isolation of the scuttle) should not be used. We therefore suggest, and we believe the Expl: Dept. are in agreement, that the 20 HP. steering with the larger tube, larger worm, etc., as originally designed, should be standardised without waiting for the cast dash, [crossed out word] subject to, of course, a successful run in France, the cast dash to come in as soon as possible afterwards.

In the meantime, in order to test the value of the additional stiffness given by the cast dash, we have asked the Expl: Dept: to temporarily rig up a sheet metal and tubular stiffening scheme on the existing dash of the car intended for a 10,000 miles test.
