(2) The water and oil pump drives are at any convenient spot beyond the dynamo, all of which are on the exhaust side. It was suggested by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} that we place the ignition tower centrally above the camshaft, and so have the shortest HT. wires. possible. We at WW. have also examined the gearbox in case the engine has to be pushed 7" or 8" further forward, and we find that although this will need some alteration to the patterns the work we have done is equally applicable. Should we have to drive the supercharger from the back of the engine we find that the steering box will clear the drive quite alright, but that it would foul the supercharger, unless the supercharger is definitely in front of the steering box. In conclusion, we are quite satisfied now that with the present length of chassis, bonnet, etc, we can have either arrangement without running into impossible features of design, but we shall have to decide which we are going to adopt, or the alterations to the patterns will be a very extensive job, and will considerably delay the work. R.{Sir Henry Royce} LATER. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}, in conversation with DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}, suggested that the alternate drive should have another wheel in the group, but this would give smaller wheels running faster, and I think could be avoided. | ||
