Y 6135 To Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/MS. from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Les.2/KT.19.5.32. SMITH INSTRUMENTS. Will you please return the 3 petrol gauge instrument board units which were personally handed to us by Mr Manwaring. These instruments have friction damping for the needles and have been on loan from S.Smith & Sons. We have given the petrol gauge No.P5. a thorough road test and have proved that the damping spoils the accuracy of the instrument. Will you also return the 2 petrol gauge instrument board units EXX.6552 which were supplied in the 2 original patches. The dials require re-marking and re-fixing. As we owe S.Smith & Sons a petrol gauge instrument board unit, handed to us by Mr Manwaring on another occasion, we suggest that S.Smith & sons retain one of these instruments and return the other when it has been brought up to date. We are also sending you the thermometer which caused trouble on 19-EX car with Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} Smiths' particularly asked for this thermometer for examination, Smiths' reference No.91222. The failure appears to be due to the dial coming loose and thus preventing any movement of the needle. If this thermometer and the one supplied for 19-EX at Folkestone have been paid for, we suggest that the former should be returned to us with the latest dial fixing.
