1044 CONFIDENTIAL. To: Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 4/h.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 12.1.44. c.c. to FJH{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation} 16 H.P. ENGINE. It is clear that we have three main problems in connection with this unit at the moment : 1. The evolution of a successful induction system giving a reasonable consumption. 2. The elimination of noises which are at present in evidence on the engine. 3. Reduction of cylinder bore wear to a reasonable degree. With this object in view, it is necessary to get two 16 h.p. engines running at the earliest possible moment; one of which may well be built up out of the pieces at present on the 14 h.p. One will have to be run on the test-bed - the other in the vehicle. In order to get a target at which to aim, I think we may well run the 14 h.p. Hillman at the same weight as Silver Ripple, and check the figures obtained. It will, of course, be necessary to run one car behind the other to get a comparative consumption figure which means anything.
