In response to your memo .BJ2/H24524,

to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}

I had the impression that you had dealt with most of these matters, but the following are my opinions however:-

(1) WIRE WHEELS - RUDGE WHITWORTH. X4221

grounds to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} objects at present on certain these wheels. I suggest that further tests should be made and that a sample should be sent to WW.

-(2). BEVEL PINIONS & WHEELS FITTED TO FIRST 220. OF 20.HP.SERIES. X9247 X4569

There appears to me to be no reason for a desperate policy, and I suggest that we only change these gears whenever the cars come into the Works for overhaul.

(3). SHORTER GEAR LEVER. X3926

I quite agree to the use of a shorter gear lever on the 40/50 as standard.

(4). 20.HP. FOOT BRAKE. X4255

I do not think this can be improved as regards design. It is now of the best propor-tions possible, and is only defective in performance if there is something wrong with the brake, such as (1) adjustment, (2) bedding of the shoes, (3) mater-ials of the brake surfaces, or (4) oil on the brake. The standard 20.HP. brake in the normal condition is more powerful than the 40/50. If wrong it is a production and maintenance matter to put right. Our own experience has been most satisfactory. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will say if the above is incorrect according to his views.
