This arrangement struck us as preferable to the usual arrangement as at no time did the car free wheel and the decision about using overdrive or direct lay with the driver and did not depend entirely on the car speed. Our chief interest in this car was to see whether this Studebaker arrangement lent itself to a simple relay control giving a choice of the top two gears without the necessity of using the clutch pedal.
