Clearances of Sub-frame to rear brake drums:-

Measurements taken of chassis 49-WJ at Messrs. Mulliners, Northampton, show that to give the necessary clearances the flanges of sub-frame at rear should be cut away, as follows:-

The top flange should measure 1 3/8" front to back. The bottom flange should measure 1 1/2". The distance of cutting away should be extended to 15" over-all. The increased amount to extend equally at either end frome centre line of axle:-

A further trouble was experienced at Messrs. Mulliners - the rear heel board had to be cut away to correspond with the extra amount removed from sub-frame forward.
The test for touching was by swaying car from side to side stationary, with full load on.
The limit of swaying was such as to bring the rubber buffers to within 1" of the axle.

Messrs. Mulliners are very anxious to know whether they should cut away the sub-frames they have in hand for bodies being built on their premises as soon as ever possible. To deal with this job after the body is mounted is somewhat tedious and expensive. Other coachbuilders will no doubt be similarly placed.
