The Chief Inspector of Naval Ordnance,

For the attention of Cdr.{W. J. Chandler - Chief Clerk} Redman.

Dear Sirs,

Re 40 mm. Naval Gun Type BD.{Mr Berend}

We are reaching the closing stages of the finalised design for the fitting of our 40 mm. gun. Type BD{Mr Berend} to the Oerlikon Mounting and are considering the gunners sling.

On the gun at Whale Island, we used a webbing strap, with chain and a dog lead clasp. We would like to have a suitable webbing both in weight and colour, which is about 3.000 inches wide, and a clasp a little more nautical than that of a dog's lead.

We feel that there may be available such accessories in the nautical or gun industry and wondered whether you could help us to get into touch with a likely source of supply.

The idea of the chains from the aiming handle and the clasps on the end of the sling is to provide each gunner with a means of adjustment to suit his build.

Yours faithfully,

H.I.F. Evernden,
Chief of Design, Gun Installation
Section, for Rolls-Royce Ltd.
