Bentley / Mr Barrington} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/MA.22.8.33. BENTLEY PISTONS. On the original 10,000 miles test we had three troubles with the pistons. These were, gudgeon pin locking device, piston ring stops and piston skirt. At the completion of 6,300 miles running on the test at present in progress we have had a repetition of the skirt failure, the other two failures appear to have been completely cured by alteration to design. We have despatched another set of piston to DW. with minor modifications to the dimensions which should reduce the chance of failure. In the meantime we are urging further experiments on pistons which are in hand at Derby. In considering this failure, it should be recalled that a piston skirt broke in an almost exactly similar manner on the standard 20/25 10,000 miles test reported in Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}6/KT. 6.2.31. but we have no record of it ever being reproduced in customers hands.
