ORIGINAL
Herewith we send print of N. sch. 3206., unfinished drawing of the hypoid axle centre case.
This follows the lines of the existing .850 offset 25HP. axle which has run two 10,000 mile tests, but modifications were necessary for the following reasons:
(a) The increase of the axle shaft from 1.100 to 1.250 requires the next size bearing on the differential, which also causes the axle tube ends to increase in dia.
(b) Though the difficulty with the pinion on the 25HP. axle has been proved not to be due to the thrust bearing being inadequate, and has now been overcome, it has appeared to be desirable to increase the pinion thrust bearing because of the increase of engine size from 3.5 to 4.5 litres. If this were not done the bearing would compare unfavourably with P. 2.
The existing 25HP. gears however appear to be quite suitable for Japan 3.
While Derby want a screw adjustment on the crown wheel thrust bearing they do not like the tangent bolt clamping the screw thread, which has been used hitherto, because of distortion. We shew a suggestion using a lock nut, which also simplifies the bearing housing forging.
We have indicated one or two other points in pencil on the print.
