Re Aluminium 8 Cylinder Engine 3.250 Bore Unconventional.

With reference to memo' Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}S/MH.{M. Huckerby}6.6.39, the following work will require placing in hand.

(1) Drawing of Crankcase & Cylinders. (new drawing).

The pattern will require a new valve chest and tappet chamber portion, to be interchangeable on pattern EB.4600. The water jacket portion of cylinder barrels will also require modification to core box on account of larger bore.
Rear end facing requires slight modification and sufficient metal left in camshaft bores to allow for 2.000" dia. camshaft bearing.

(2) Liners EB.4936 may be used as detailed for Conventional Dry Liner Engine.

(3) Valve Seats. The above memo' requests the R.R. type of screwed in valve seats, but scheme PD.308 shows a plain press in type as used by many car manufacturers of America and introduced to us in memo' E.3/HP.27.4.37. JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} informs us that this type of seat has never been tried by us. It would therefore appear necessary to have a decision on this point.

(4) Exhaust Valve Guides. The type of guide to be used in the alum crankcase will require a decision.
The type at present used in iron has a parallel interference fit with no location shoulder being pressed in from the top face. The scheme PD.308 shows a taper fit guide pressed in from the top.

(5) New Cylinder Head Gasket will be required.

(6) Cylinder Head EB.4098 will require metal removing from the joint face to readjust the compression ratio.

(7) A number of small items Studs etc. will be required on account of the above modifications.
