His RECEIVED [STAMP: JUN 24] Y4195 From Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} -R.I. Governor. C. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}23/W22.6.27. Re Overhaul of 10 Armoured Cars. We send you herewith a short report on the general condition of the above cars, and more especially how they compare with the repairs required on the standard S.G. chassis. The chassis were delivered to the War Office at the end of 1920. From what we have been able to learn from the Officers who have visited us, they have spent most of their time in India in sandy districts. Judging from the general wear which has taken place we should assume they have run somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50/60,000 miles. The total weight of an armoured car complete is 4 1/2 tons. Weight on Front Axle - 1 ton.16cwts. Weight on Rear Axle - 2ton.14c. Whilst the cars are being overhauled we are changing the Rear Axle Gear ratio from 16 x 52 to 14 x 52 tooth Gears. Engine. The only unusual feature in the Engine was the Clutch Fabrics were very badly worn, most probably due to the sand. Gearbox. In 9 of the Gearboxes the 1st. and 2nd. speed Gears were very badly worn, more especially the 2nd. Gear. It would almost appear that this is the Gear which is mostly used. Frame. Nothing unusual. Steering. Nothing unusual. Sphere. The Spheres behind the Gearbox have all been damaged. this apparently being caused through bumping due to the excessive movement of the springs. Side Steering Tube. These were all bent. Front Axle. All the Front Axles were bent backwards between the Spring Clips and the Pivots. Cross Steering Tube. These were all found to be bent, but are being replaced by a stronger type. Rear Axle. All the Torque Tubes and the Extension Tubes were slightly bent. P.T.O. | ||
