Oil Drag Tests - further to previous report Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/WB{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}10/KW.27.5.35

The previous gearbox 4-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} - tested, was of the needle bearing type, whilst this particular box - 1-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} - was of the plain bearing type, also whereas the former was new, the latter had been run on SpectreCodename for Phantom III I chassis.

The results obtained show that there was less drag with 1-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} box in 4th speed and in neutral, also the change gear mechanism was slightly more efficient. These results, as with 4-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} box, were average figures, a variation of +- 5 lb.ft. torque being obtained at 15 lb.ft. 3rd motion shaft torque by varying the relative positions of the 1st and 3rd motion shafts. Temperature and lubrication conditions did not materially affect the change gear results, although in this connection it should be understood that the term "dry" represents emptying the oil and swilling with paraffin: this also applies to both sets of tests.

The atmospheric conditions prevented the performance of the 1-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} power loss/speed tests at the same temperatures as 4-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} tests, but the results indicate that 1-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} was slightly less efficient than 4-HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} in this respect.

The one result shown at 19/21°C. was obtained by cooling the oil overnight in a water tank.
