Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} &/KT. 1st April 1931. The Cadillac Motor Car Co. Detroit, Michigan. U.S.A. For the attention of Mr. Olley. Dear Sir, Mr. Hives has asked me to write you in respect of cast iron brake drums that are used on cars in America. We have been trying a set of ribbed brake drums centrifugally cast, they have been made by the British Piston Ring Co. and the-chemical composition is as follows - Total Carbon 3.35% Combined carbon. .65% Silicon 2.1% Sulphur .10% Phosphorus .55% Manganese .8% Nickel .6% Chromium .25% We find however after a fair amount of hard work that the braking surface has become a mass of cracks. We would be very pleased if you could let us have any information of the material used in America. Yours faithfully, For Rolls-Royce Ltd. | ||
