To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CL. ORIGINAL R6/G3.4.19. 3rd. April 1919. RE 7-CA. X682 X3532 X.3129 In preparing 7-CA for a fairly long run last week, I noticed several little points about the clutch which I thought should be modified as soon as possible, because they made it look ugly, awkward and inaccessible. Mr. Elliott is sending sketches of the modifications we suggest, which are not serious. On two days I ran the car about 140 miles, which it did wonderfully well, the one exception being that the foot-brake seemed to have oil on it from the commencement, which did not improve much in the hilly country I passed through. I shall be glad if you will make any experiments possible to reduce the risk of oil getting on the brakes, and find out what is the best thing to do when oil does get on the brakes. One feels there should be a window through the mud screen which could be opened, and a syringe of petrol or paraffin used to wash out the brake. In conclusion, it was quite wonderful that when the circulating water was boiling the engine continued to run so slowly that it made one think in traffic that it was often stopped. The ignition, as you will remember, is the R.R. old battery ignition, fitted with an aero coil, and on a twelve voltage circuit is quite satisfactory, but does not fire well so weak a mixture as the magneto; this, I think, is usual with all battery ignitions I have tested.
